The Government is encouraging all workers to save for their retirement, in as easy a way as possible. As a result, the requirements for employers to provide – and contribute to pensions for their employees are increasing.
Since 2012 some employers, starting with the largest, have been duty-bound to enrol their eligible workers into a workplace pension, unless they are already in a scheme which meets the Government's requirements for eligibility and contribution levels. These requirements now extend to virtually all employers.
In general, to be eligible, workers must be:
• At least 22 years old;
• Below state pension age;
• Earning more than a minimum amount each year; and
• Work, or ordinarily work, in the UK (under their contract).
The employer must make all the arrangements and the individual need do nothing to be put into the scheme, hence the term auto-enrolment.
Employers must pay a minimum contribution into the pension scheme for their eligible workers, although employees may also be required to contribute. Employers may also pay more than the minimum requirement, or allow their employees to do so.
For many smaller employers, setting up a scheme and ensuring that it meets the requirements, represents an enormous administrative burden. We can assist with all aspects of setting up suitable schemes and ensuring that both business owners and their staff receive full information and advice on their requirements, options and benefits.
Derek Rush, our Corporate Client Manager, can help you through your Auto Enrolment Journey.
Derek has worked with clients ranging from a handful of employees to larger, complex companies with complex requirements. He has ensured that transitional and complicated journeys - from pre staging date (when pension duties begin) to collecting and investing pension contributions - were made with minimum worry and minimum hassle from the clients’ perspectives.
We will ensure that your auto enrolment duties are dealt with from an early stage, by offering client visits and technical support. We can then look after your pension duties and responsibilities beyond your staging date, ensuring that you are in the best hands for your auto enrolment journey .
