Auto-enrolment

The Government is encouraging all workers to save for their retirement, in as easy a way as possible. As a result, the requirements for employers to provide – and contribute to pensions for their employees are increasing.

Since 2012 some employers, starting with the largest, have been duty-bound to enrol their eligible workers into a workplace pension, unless they are already in a scheme which meets the Government's requirements for eligibility and contribution levels. These requirements now extend to virtually all employers.

In general, to be eligible, workers must be:

• At least 22 years old;
• Below state pension age;
• Earning more than a minimum amount each year; and
• Work, or ordinarily work, in the UK (under their contract).

The employer must make all the arrangements and the individual need do nothing to be put into the scheme, hence the term auto-enrolment.

Employers must pay a minimum contribution into the pension scheme for their eligible workers, although employees may also be required to contribute. Employers may also pay more than the minimum requirement, or allow their employees to do so.
